Can I burn in the city limits or outside the city limits? There is no burning in city limits. Debris and large trees and branches must be hauled out to the landfill or other dumping area. Burning outside the city limits must meet guidelines of Ohio E.P.A. that can be picked up at the Waverly Fire Department or on the Ohio E.P.A. website: www.epa.state.oh.us/dapc/general/openburning.html
Can I have a backyard fire ring in the city? Yes, but it must have a mesh cover to limit flying embers.
Can I rent the fire station for a party? The Waverly Fire Department does not rent the building for parties.
How do I become a volunteer firefighter? Contact Randy Armbruster or Jeff Minshall to get an application (740) 947-2826.
Where can I learn C.P.R.? Contact Greg Barch at Pike Community Hospital (740) 947-2186.

Why do I see firefighters cutting holes in roofs on fires? This is called "venting the roof." There are two basic reasons for this practice. Dangerous gases and dark smoke accumulate in a burning building. Unlike the movie versions of fires, it is impossible for firefighters to see in such an environment. When a hole is made in the roof because the building is "vented," the smoke and gases escape because heat and smoke rise. It makes it much easier for the firefighters in the building to see. It also reduces the possibilities of backdraft and flashover. Another reason for venting the roof is to see how far the fire has progressed. One of the fastest avenues through which fires spread is the attic. Heat and smoke rise into the attic where the fire can move quickly. Firefighters may go ahead of the fire on a roof, cut holes to access the attic and stop the fire from spreading through the attic.
Who do I call if my fire extinguisher doesn’t work or is empty? Look for fire extinguishers in the yellow pages. The Waverly Fire Department cannot fill or certify fire extinguishers.
Can I obtain or purchase patches from your fire department? No, shoulder patches are no longer available from our department.
Does the fire department fill swimming pools? No, residents may fill their own pools by contacting the City of Waverly Public Utilities Department, (740) 941-0109, to rent a water meter and fill the pool using a hydrant. Hoses may be rented through local equipment rental vendors. Another suggestion would be to contact a pool company and ask if they have a list of vendors who might be able to provide this service for you.
Where should smoke detectors be placed in my home? At a minimum you need to place a smoke detector on each level of your home outside each sleeping area. Ideally, you should place one on each level of your home and in each sleeping area.
When should I change the batteries in my smoke detectors? It is recommended that you change your batteries when you change your clocks – twice a year.
Does the fire department give away smoke detectors? No, we cannot issue smoke detectors at this time.
Do I need a carbon monoxide detector? We recommend that if you use natural gas or propane in your home that you install a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon Monoxide is an invisible, colorless, tasteless gas that kills and injures thousands each year.
What kind of CO detector should I get and where should I put it in my home? We recommend that you purchase a UL listed detector with LED readout. Mount a detector on each level of your home outside sleeping areas about 5 feet off the floor.
What do firefighters do all day? Firefighters do a variety of things throughout the day. Our primary responsibility is to save lives and protect property. We respond to all fires and accidents. We train to keep up our skills in firefighting, hazardous materials, confined space, and technical rescue. We do prevention activities such as inspections for life safety at businesses and public education activities such as visiting schools and doing fire extinguisher training for the public. Of course we also work to keep our equipment clean and in good working order at all times.
